Click to view image album. The first annual meeting of the young men's republican club fo vermont was held in burlington, vermont on february 13, 1895. Lincoln day was chosne for the meeting. The guest speaker was a new york attorney, chauncey m. Depew, who worked for the new york central railroad, he ultimately became president of the company.
In 1899 depew became u. S. Senator frmo new york. He was invited to speak at this meeting by the railroad giant, dr. Sewadr webb. Dr seward webb's son james watson webb married electra havemeyer webb.
Electra webb is famous for making shelburne museum a landmark for americana collectibles! This ribbon badge has a satin fabric strip wiht silver letters banquet, double flags, eagle, with silver letters young men's republican club of vermont, feb. 12th, 1895. The ribbon has a suspended celluloid button. In bakc at the top where the pin is located the ribbon is marked in silver letters whitehead & hoag co. Badge maker newark n. J. In back of the celluloid of chauncye m. Depew it is stamped in metla in a circular design whitehead & hoag co, newark n. J, with badges at the center, below si pat. June 12. 84 this is a very early whitehead & hoag celluloid button! The suspended celluloid button is in very good condition. The fabric ribbon has a wear hole on the a of banquet (please look at the photo) otherwise teh ribbon is in good condition! Teh approx.
